Our sexuality isn’t just a compartment of our life. It impacts every single area.

For so many, there is a desire to deeply understand their own desires, boundaries, and sexual identities. People examining their sexual orientation, looking to experience new relational dynamics, expand their sexual experiences, or struggling to integrate what they already know, come to counseling to actively do work.

I utilize a process I often refer to as Pleasure Informed Therapy.

Understanding Pleasure Informed Therapy

Pleasure Informed Therapy is a holistic therapeutic approach that recognizes the integral role of sexuality in overall well-being. This method goes beyond addressing sexual issues in isolation, considering how sexual health and pleasure influence and are influenced by emotional, mental, and physical health.

Key Components of Pleasure Informed Therapy

  1. Comprehensive Sexual Education:

    • Educating clients about the various aspects of sexual health, including anatomy, sexual response cycles, and the spectrum of sexual orientations and identities.

    • Providing accurate information to dispel myths and reduce shame or stigma associated with sexuality.

  2. Exploration of Desires and Boundaries:

    • Encouraging clients to express their sexual desires and boundaries in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

    • Helping clients develop the language and confidence to communicate these desires and boundaries with partners.

  3. Integration of Sexual Identity:

    • Assisting clients in understanding and embracing their sexual identity as an integral part of their overall identity.

    • Supporting clients in navigating the complexities of coming out, if applicable, and fostering self-acceptance.

  4. Addressing Relational Dynamics:

    • Examining how clients' sexual experiences and identities affect their relationships.

    • Facilitating open and honest communication between partners to enhance intimacy and connection.

  5. Healing Sexual Trauma:

    • Providing a safe space for clients to process and heal from past sexual traumas.

    • Utilizing trauma-informed approaches to rebuild a sense of safety and trust in the body and in relationships.

  6. Emphasizing Pleasure and Joy:

    • Encouraging clients to prioritize pleasure and joy in their sexual experiences.

    • Challenging societal narratives that equate sex with shame or guilt, and promoting a positive, pleasure-centric perspective.

Benefits of Pleasure Informed Therapy

  • Enhanced Self-Awareness: Clients gain a deeper understanding of their own desires, boundaries, and identities.

  • Improved Communication: Clients learn to articulate their needs and preferences more effectively in their relationships.

  • Greater Sexual Satisfaction: By prioritizing pleasure and addressing barriers, clients often experience increased sexual satisfaction.

  • Holistic Well-Being: Recognizing the interconnectedness of sexuality with overall health, clients can achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Embracing one’s sexuality without shame or judgment is crucial. I help clients foster compassionate acceptance of themselves, which is essential for true intimacy and connection.

Pleasure-informed therapy is particularly effective for couples who have faced intimacy issues, including betrayal or loss. It can also be powerful for individuals dealing with hypersexuality, sexual codependency, anxious or avoidant attachments, sexual addictions, or discomfort with sex despite a desire for a more fulfilling sexual life.

Couples and individuals learn to communicate openly about their needs and desires, rebuild trust, and create a more fulfilling sexual relationship.

Through pleasure-informed therapy, clients often find the courage to break free from societal norms, challenge limiting beliefs, and ultimately create a more fulfilling and liberating sexual and relational life. They learn to embrace their sexuality as a vital and joyful part of their identity, leading to greater overall well-being and satisfaction.

I know, first hand, the transformational power of accepting your whole self and letting who you are be seen in the light of day. Do you want to take that step?
